Queensland, found on the north-east corner of Australia, is a diver's paradise; boasting some of the most spectacular underwater scenes in the world. From vibrant coral reefs to unique marine life, Queensland's diving spots cater to both beginners and seasoned divers. Let's explore the top diving spots in Queensland that you shouldn't miss during your next visit.

Best Diving Spots in Queensland

One of the best-known diving spots in Queensland is the Great Barrier Reef. With over 2,300 kilometres of stunning coral reef stretching along the coast, this destination is unmatched in beauty and diversity. Here you can encounter a variety of marine life, including tropical fish, sharks, and sea turtles.

Some popular spots within the reef include the reefs found off the coast near Cairns, and Port Douglas. Or there are liveaboard options to take you to the Ribbon Reefs, and the untouched far north.

For one of the best dives in Australia, check out the SS Yongala, a sunken passenger and cargo ship off the coast of Ayr. It is regarded as one of the best wreck dives in the world, teeming with marine life such as large schools of fish, rays, and even turtles. It offers a unique glimpse into history while providing an incredible diving experience. The Yongala is found in 30 meters of water, and is in an exposed location. This means that there are often strong currents, and visibility can be reduced, so make an honest assessment about whether this is a dive site that matches your skill and experience level - ideally Advanced Open Water or higher, and with recent diving experience.

Dive Sites for Every Skill Level

Whether you are a newbie or a pro, Queensland has something for everyone. If you're just starting, explore the shallow dives at the Whitsunday Islands. This location is packed with beginner-friendly sites like Bali Hai and Blue Pearl Bay, where you can enjoy a myriad of colourful corals without diving too deep.

Advanced divers can seek the challenging dives at the Coral Sea, along the deep walls at Osprey, Bouganville, and Holmes Reefs. In these deeper water, we are typically greeted by endless visibility (40+ meters), and larger pelagic species including sharks, and manta rays.

Heading back over to the GBR, areas such as the Ribbon Reefs feature sites like the Cod Hole, Pixie Pinnacle, Challenger Bay, and Steve's Bommie. These are some of the best-known spots on the reef, and have been amazing divers for decades.

Where in Queensland is the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is located along the northeastern coast of Queensland, stretching from Bundaberg in the south to Cape York in the north. This UNESCO World Heritage site includes 3000 reef systems, and over 900 islands and cays, offering countless diving opportunities.

Key access points include Cairns, Port Douglas, and the Whitsunday Islands. Each location provides different access routes and experiences on the reef.

The reef's accessibility makes it a prime destination for divers from all around the globe. Tour operators frequently offer full-day and half-day trips, ensuring you find a package that fits your schedule and dive level. For those with the time, a liveaboard is a fantastic way to dive reef, as it allows access to some of the more pristine, and far-flung locations.

Unique Marine Life Encounters

Diving in Queensland means more than just beautiful corals. There a number of different parts of the reef that are well known for particular, highly sought-after animal sightings. This includes the incredible manta rays of Lady Elliot Island, and the diver-sized fish at the 'Cod Hole'. However, our favourite time of year is from June-August, when we have the privilege of hosting the annual Minke Whale migration. These small baleen whales, which many visitors say look like dolphins, are some of the ocean's friendliest creatures, and will actively seek-out human interaction. Swimming with the minkes is only possible under a special permit, one of which we are lucky enough to have the use of!

Practical Diving Tips

When planning your diving adventure in Queensland, consider the following tips to enhance your experience:

• Choose the Right Season: The best time for diving in Queensland is often considered to be from June to October, which is the dry season. This is when we can have the bluest waters, though please be aware that this can also be a very windy time of year, so if you are prone to motion sickness; please keep that in mind. This is also "whale season", with the Minkes and Humpbacks migrating through the Great Barrier Reef.

  
  

• Pack Proper Gear: If you're diving with a tour operator like ourselves, we will provide most or all of the gear you need. However, remember to bring your swimwear, sunscreen, and a waterproof camera to capture your underwater adventures.

  
  

• Understand Safety Protocols: Diving in Queensland is done under the State Government's Code of Practice, and the region boasts a proud record in diver safety. • Stay Hydrated and Rested: Diving can be physically demanding. Make sure to hydrate and get plenty of rest before diving. This is especially important if you are planning multiple dives in a day, or during a liveaboard dive trip.

  
  

• Respect Marine Life: Always follow the “leave only bubbles” rule. Avoid making contact with the reef, both through responsible behaviour, and by using good buoyancy control. Diving correctly weighted - not over or under, is crucial to avoiding issues with buoyancy, and also makes your dives more comfortable and enjoyable.

  
  

• Flying after Diving: If you are traveling by air, please make sure to leave at least a 24-hour break before flying after diving. If you are diving for more than one day, it's a great idea to have a full gap-day.
